Jeff Marek likes to say that low-hanging fruit is still nutritious. I took that to heart when writing today’s storylines piece. No Regerts. (I know it’s misspelled. Learn to take a joke.)

Fishy Returns

“If we had more time in between games you would have probably seen him in there.” Said Rod Brind’Amour hours before the Hurricanes’ 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Brind’Amour continued, “We haven’t had any practice time.”

Sebastion Aho has been missing from Brind’Amour’s lineup card since December 6th. The undisclosed injury has also kept the Finnish forward out of team practices. While the team didn’t hold an official practice on Monday a roster move might have shown the team’s hand.

Jack Drury’s reassignment to the Chicago Wolves would be a clear indication of Aho’s return. Assuming Brind’Amour would not knowingly create a situation to only have eleven forwards in the lineup come puck drop.

Moving on up

Both the Carolina Hurricanes and the New Jersey Devils are deep into streaks. For the Hurricanes they have points in their last 11 games. While New Jersey is on a 5-game losing streak. Carolina has outscored their opponents 15-8 in their last 5 games. Meanwhile, New Jersey fell to their challengers 20-11.

If you want to take it a step further, the Hurricanes hold a 6-1-0 record in the team’s last 7 meetings. Last January, Jack LaFontaine lost the first start of his still-young career in Carolina’s only loss in that stretch.

A win tonight would move the Hurricanes to the top of the Metropolitan Division.

Jarvis Turns 100

When the Hurricanes take the ice tonight Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis will skate in his 100th career NHL game. Drafted 13th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry draft. At the age of 19, Jarvis was able to force his way into Carolina’s roster last season. In 68 games he was able to collect 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points.

“As a goal-scorer, he’s got a good shot,” Said teammate Paul Stastny. “But if you watch him, he has a knack for going to the net. You can score goals from outside, but the difference between a 20-and a 30-goal scorer, or a 40-goal scorer, are guys that get to the hard areas.”
