Elliotte Friedman reported on the Jeff Marek Show that the Chicago Wolves, the Carolina Hurricanes’ current American Hockey League affiliate, will become independent next season. Friedman said that the Wolves emailed agents to let them know about the franchise’s new direction.
Chicago is the best-funded AHL team with a championship pedigree. While the move is surprising; it isn’t unheard of. The Wolves are one of eleven owner-operated AHL franchises. NHL organizations own the other twenty-one. The world of minor league hockey has always been a three-ring circus. In recent years the AHL has taken pride in being the NHL’s developmental league. Prior to the leagues, close alignment affiliations would change each season. Multiple National Hockey League teams would be affiliated with a single AHL club. In uncommon but not rare instances teams would fold at the end of or even during a season without prior warning.
Modern AHL clubs are more stable than their historical counterparts. But Chicago’s decision reminds me of the old system.
It appears that the Wolves know they’re fighting an uphill battle. During the segment, Friedman paraphrased Chicago’s pitch to potential players in the email sent to agents. “If you’re not happy with the current AHL path, or you want a different path, we’re willing to listen to you on how you want your players developed.” It’s believed that the Wolves would target older players looking for a fresh start, or a way out of their current organization.
For those concerned that this could have a negative impact on the Carolina Hurricanes, relax. Chicago choosing to go independent doesn’t change much for Carolina. All of their prospects still belong to the club. Only players signed directly by the Wolves will be retained for next season. Prospects like Ryan Suzuki, Anttoni Honka, Max Lajoie, and all of your favorite future Canes will play for whoever the Hurricanes affiliate with next season. If they don’t make the big club’s roster of course.
